Unlike books, people do judge a house by its “cover”. First impressions are extremely important whether owners want to impress visitors, keep up with the Jones’, or sell the property
. Location, construction style and the state of neighbouring properties all contribute to first impressions and some houses just seem to have natural kerb appeal. But even the smallest changes can enhance a home’s attraction and saleability.
It’s a well known fact that visitors – and potential buyers – take no more than eight seconds to decide whether or not they like a house. In fact, many have already made up their minds when they are waiting for the door to be answered. And during that time, the only part of the home they’re looking at is the door. The property’s outer appearance really can be the deal maker (or breaker) when it comes to buying a home.
We’ve noticed a trend in people wanting to invest in their front door – not only to upgrade security and energy efficiency, but we’re finding people also want colours that will brighten their mood after a rough day and they want something that is immediately impactful on the front of their home. Interestingly, the ‘feel good’ bright factor is a phenomenon akin to the lipstick Index in New York following 9/11 – although consumer spending fell sharply, sales of lipstick grew by 11%.
Bright red has recently become a fashionable colour for doors, and an increasing number of homeowners are opting for other colour like green and blue to brighten their mood when they come home. And for those who don’t want to stand out too much, black is always a safe bet, or a flat, dark plum colour. Trends in conservation areas in our region are for contemporary matt, muted and National Trust colours.
We’ve recently extended our showroom to display even more door choices in many colours – so why not visit us for inspiration or click on our Door Section to see how we can help you improve the kerb appeal of your home.
