Name: Phillip Wall
Job Title: Commercial Manager
What is your job? I am responsible for managing all Commercial and Supply Only projects, from the initial Tender stage through to the ongoing Client relationship management and successful completion of the projects. I also offer domestic sales support when it is needed and oversee the procurement process.
How long have you worked for ERW? 15 years so far. I started working here in 2002 part time throughout college and university. I’ve worked in different roles in the business since then including Procurement administrator, Renovation Surveyor and Commercial Estimator.
How would you describe working at ERW? Eventful. I’ve been working in this business a long time and things still surprise me which is good. As our products grow so do people’s imaginations so it’s great to try to accommodate new ideas, and take on challenging new environments.
What is your favourite part of the job? It has to be building and nurturing relationships within our Client base but I get the most satisfaction out of delivering on the promises we make to our clients, through high quality products and first class personal service. It’s great to see a job well done at the end of the day and that sense of satisfaction is hard to beat.
What have you worked on recently that you’re proud of? The successful delivery of a project on a Newcastle University site, working with MGM Ltd to renovate and upgrade all Historic Timber windows at Devonshire Terrace. The most interesting aspect of the job involved removing all of the original Leaded lights, 44 no in total, renovating them and encapsulating them into new Double glazed units which were fitted into New purpose made timber sashes which we installed along with our Draught proofing and several New Historically accurate Bespoke windows.
What do you look forward to doing at work each day? Giving that little bit extra that helps win over a potential client by being informed, honest, working with realistic information and, of course, being cost efficient.
What is the most important thing you have learnt working here? I’ve gained knowledge and experience in joinery and specialist renovation techniques due to the many roles I have had working here. I’ve also honed my Commercial Trade knowledge to enable me to deal with that challenging environment, which has led to me been in a prominent position in the company.
If your co-workers could describe you using three words what would they be and why? Ask my co-workers. There you are, three words. (Note: His co-workers used words such as particular, committed and busy.)
What do you like to do to relax when you aren’t hard at work? Family is a big part of my life outside of work. I have a young son who likes to steal all of my attention but when I’m not with him I like to walk my dogs and keep fit at the gym. I also play rugby league for Jarrow Vikings, who are the 2016 NE grand final winners and due to compete in the National completion in the coming weeks. I am also fortunate enough to be the Head coach of the side where it all began for me, Teesside University Rugby League.
