Top Tips for finding the right supplier of windows and doors

13th July 2010

If you’ve been thinking about replacing your windows or doors, now is the ideal time. Not only will your home be ready to beat those autumn chills, you’ll save money before the VAT increases. But choosing who to trust with your home improvement projects can be tricky, and it’s important you ask the right questions. Lawrence Wall, ERW Managing Director gives visitors some top tips of what to look for in a supplier to ensure you get the right service and products for your home

  • Look for the logo! The first question is a really basic one: are they FENSA registered? FENSA is the industry gold standard for replacement windows and doors. If the answer is no, then you will need to pay for a certificate from your local building control office to say that the installation has Building Regulation approval.
  • Visit their offices and showroom and ask to look around their factory – see what they are making for other homeowners. A reputable Company would have a range of products for different applications and should be willing to discuss your project with you in a relaxed informal setting without any pressure.
  • Who will be fitting your windows and doors – Does the Company employ all their own installers or do they subcontract the installation?
  • Word of mouth and testimonials from satisfied customers in your local area are always a good indication of a company’s abilities. Professional installers should be able to show you case studies and endorsements – make sure you ask to see them.
  • It’s all in the small print – Are their Terms and Conditions reasonable, or all in favour of the Company? What Guarantee is offered? What does it cover and for how long? Frames, Glass and Installation guarantee periods can vary. Check them out before you buy!
  • Do you need to pay a deposit? More reputable firms will not ask for any payment until the works are complete.
  • Never sign an order until you are completely satisfied the proposals fit your requirements and you have slept on it. Beware of unrealistic discounts and offers to save money if you “sign up now”

With a heritage dating back to 1979, family run specialists ERW are well placed to advise you on what’s best for your home. In contrast with some companies who simply ‘buy in’ product that they then fit, ERW has its own manufacturing facility that allows single point of contact from quotation, to manufacture, to installation. The company also has its own refurbishment and renovation division with particular expertise in working in heritage and conservation properties, especially where sash windows or secondary glazing is involved.
