Sliding Sash Windows

Used in the UK extensively since the seventeenth century, the elegant proportions and charming aesthetic appeal of sash windows are a familiar part of the UK's building heritage and architectural landscape. ERW is passionate about preserving this and have particular experience of working in listed buildings and within conservation areas. ERW also operate a specialist sash refurbishment and sash renovation division.
We also design, manufacture and replace existing sash windows where legislation and the environment allow, or for new build properties. Our sliding sash range incorporates modern thinking, energy efficiency and technology, combined with the traditional styling, values and attention to detail we all love about original sashes.
Thanks to our 30 year heritage, we believe we're in a unique position to advise and work with home owners, planners, architects and builders to get design, make and install the right new timber sash windows for every project. As standard, the frames and sashes are made from high quality European redwood and hardwood from sustainably managed forests.

Glazing
Low E thermally efficient double glazed units manufactured to EN1279 (part 2) are fitted as standard incorporating next generation warm edge technology. 4mm and 6mm single glazing is available on request, as are a wide range of glass types and specifications including obscure, safety and bronze anti-sun.
A fully drained and vented glazing system is used for improved performance and insulation. Timber beads are fitted all around to simulate the particular window finish.
Multi-Panels
A wide range of timber glazing or solid Georgian bars can be fitted on factory glazed units to give an authentic multi-pane effect. Alternatively, solid bars can be incorporated on request to single panes.
Super Spacer Warm Edge Technology
Choosing windows, doors and conservatories with Super Spacer and Low 'E' glass may seem a long way from saving the planet, but the insulating properties of this thermally efficient spacer bar are such that they can reduce heat loss by up to a staggering 94% through your window.
- Up to 70% reduced condensation
- Improved window 'U' Value up to 0.2 W/m2k
- Up to 65% warmer at the edge of the glass
- Reduce heat loss by up to 94%
- Up to 2dB noise reduction
Up to 70% reduced condensation
Super Spacer reduces condensation by up to 70% virtually eliminating the potential breeding ground for mould growth and bacteria.
Up to 65% warmer at the edge
Windows fitted with Super Spacer have a warmer internal edge temperature of up to 65% reducing heat loss through the edge of the glass.
Reduced energy costs
80% of the energy lost through a window occurs at the edge of the glass because of the highly conductive nature of aluminium spacer. Super Spacer blocks the heat loss and reduces energy costs.
Up to 2Db noise reduction
Sealed units featuring Super Spacer have been proven to reduce transmission by up to 2dB.
Old meets new...The performance of these next generation glazing components combines perfectly with the overall traditional design integrity and product appearance.
Energy Efficient Windows
PLANITHERM is a new generation of energy saving window glass that uses advanced coatings to retain more internal warmth whilst capturing free energy from natural daylight.
We are proud to be part of the PLANITHERM Installer Network. Using Planitherm products in our range of energy efficient windows can save you up to 28% per year on your heating bills compared to traditional windows and frames.
Free Solar Heat Gain
PLANITHERM has a unique coating which captures free energy from natural daylight to heat the home.
Thermal Insulation
The coating reflects heat back into the room, helping to keep the room warmer and reduce heating bills.
Optimal Energy Ratings
As PLANITHERM is the most energy-efficient glass available, A-rated windows can be achieved using energy-efficient frames.
Haze and Tint free windows
PLANITHERM maximizes natural light entering the home without the tint or haze effects associated with some other double-glazed windows.
Eliminates Condensation
PLANITHERM helps to reduce draughts and cold spots around windows and helps to virtually eliminate internal condensation.

Ironmongery
Pulleys
Brass wheel pulleys with mirror finish polished brass face plates are fitted as standard. Ball bearing pulleys with mirror finished polished brass faceplates, for a smoother vertically sliding action on large sashes, are also available.
Fasteners
The vertical sliding sashes come with one brass non-locking fitch catch fitted to the meeting rails, and two brass hook lifts to the lower sash rail.
Security Devices
Security devices can be fitted if required – e.g the window can be fitted with one face fixed 'sash lock' and strike plate fitted with detachable key. Optionally for improved security, two such devices can be fitted.
Cleaning Facilities
Special ironmongery can be fitted to the cord and weights of the window to allow safe cleaning from inside the building. Batten rods, detachable by two thumb screws, on the opening side are supplied when this ironmongery is fitted. Alternatively the batten rods can be hinged.
Spiral Balance Hung
Smooth and easy sash operation in comparison to other methods of balancing, spiral sash balances are an ideal alternative to sash weights but do have design restrictions – e.g. horn incorporation

Finishes
Our extensive range of premium finishes include a market leading wide range of colours and woodstains that enable maintenance periods to be extended, superb colour retention and redecoration requiring only one coat application. The extremely tough and durable coating characteristics mean we can offer a 30 year guarantee against rot and fungal decay on the coatings and preservatives, 8 years on the coloured and 5 years on the stained.
A variety of decorative horn details are available on request.
